|Proposal to extend compulsory free education from 9 years to 12
There's the 'good news' today that the Govt is planning to pour more money into education by extending free education from 9 years to 12. The public will welcome this with considerable high hopes.
However, HK is still 'haunted' by the often unnecessary and detrimental imposition of uniformity by Government (on e.g. curriculum, assessment, teaching methods, medium of instruction, etc), whilst undermining the autonomy of the schools to explore constructive alternatives that will suit their students best . This, in turn, is also compromising the recruitment and retention of superior teachers.
Until these fundamental issues are addressed urgently and seriously, genuine high quality education for the children of HK will remain an unachievable dream.
